Behind The Buttons - G.A.

In October of 2018, my good friends at Five Stone Creative brought me in to provide lighting for the 3rd year in a row for a fundraising gala for a fantastic organization called Global Advance.

Each year, we craft a new lighting design based on their theme.   This year's theme was "Hope Is Rising".

Each year, there are different production elements.  Sometimes there's a set piece.  Sometimes, it's a row of black curtains.  I take the production info that I'm given and highlight, mask, and fill in the holes.   For example, they opted to go without any kind of background or backdrop this year.  Visually, that doesn't work.  On the live event camera broadcasting to the screens, that doesn't work.  For people posting on Instagram -- a black void for a background doesn't work.  So, I make one.

I just lined up 8 of my wireless LED tube fixtures and paid attention to the theme.  "Hope Is Rising".   The execution of this might be a little "on the nose" - but it is visually interesting, and backdrop much more compelling than plain black drape.

As events tend to go, there were some last minute changes.  Banners moved from the side walls to off-center of the stage.  Tighter table configurations than I had anticipated... You know... Normal stuff.   But I stay flexible.  I can plan, you can plan, everyone can plan... but stuff still changes.    Flexibility and compromise are essential.

Nothing is ever set in stone.

It was a gorgeous (and POWERFUL) evening!  I look forward to working with this group again.
